Looking into the vast array of educational books on sound design can be an exciting, but also tricky venture. You can find published material on just about every part of the sound design process, but just as easily get lost in technical details and loose scope of how the information fits into an overall design. My recent discovery of computer scientist and engineer Andy Farnell may provide answers for someone in the market for more comprehensive material on the subject.

A printable version of Designing Sound in SuperCollider is available. This book is an independent project based on Designing Sound by Andy Farnell, all about the principles and techniques needed to design sound effects for real-time synthesis. The original book provides examples in the PureData language - here we have re-created some of the examples using SuperCollider. The original book includes much more than what you see here - we're only recreating the examples and not the text! So in a sense this is not a stand-alone book and you'll get the most out of it if you have the original book with you. But we hope the examples are illustrative in themselves.

Designing Sound

Andy Farnell — a familiar name in computer audio — is a computer scientist, sound designer, author and a pioneer in the field of procedural audio. He is a visiting professor at several European Universities and a consultant to game and audio technology companies. He was very kind to find time in his busy schedule when I visited London, and we talked about what procedural audio is, where it stands now and what it can be in the future. This article is a transcription of our conversation, which he was again very kind to edit along with me. It was no easy task because there was so much good content!

A practitioner's guide to the basic principles of creating sound effects using easily accessed free software. Designing Sound teaches students and professional sound designers to understand and create sound effects starting from nothing. Its thesis is that any sound can be generated from first principles, guided by analysis and synthesis. The text takes a practitioner's perspective, exploring the basic principles of making ordinary, everyday sounds using an easily accessed free software. Readers use the Pure Data Pd language to construct sound objects, which are more flexible and useful than recordings.
