How Stella lost her groove

At the end of the movie we're prepared to concede that Stella may indeed have her groove back, but at a considerable price, and maybe not for long. If a romantic couple feels wrong to the audience, no plot gymnastics can convince us. The movie stars Angela Bassett as Stella, a divorced mom and high-powered San Francisco trader who, as the movie opens, is promising a client a guaranteed 65 percent return on some Russian bonds. Her personal life is lonely, and her sisters advise her to find a man. I'm thinking--if those returns are real, the man will find you.

How Stella Got Her Groove Back is a American romantic comedy-drama film directed by Kevin Rodney Sullivan, adapted from Terry McMillan's best- selling novel of the same title.

T he story of how Terry McMillan got her groove back is well known. Emerging from a failed marriage, a series of flaky relationships and a serious funk, the bestselling African American author escaped to Negril, Jamaica, on holiday 10 years ago. There she met a young local man, Jonathan Plummer, who seemed to answer all her prayers. He was less than half her age, gorgeous, and whatever else he was endowed with it was not the cynicism of an American man closer to her own years. McMillan had a fling that turned into something apparently more meaningful than a Shirley Valentine moment.

The original music score was composed by Michel Colombier. Stella Payne is a very successful year-old stockbroker raising her son, Quincy, and living in Marin County, California , who is persuaded by her best friend from college, Delilah Abraham, to take a well-deserved, first-class vacation to Montego Bay, Jamaica. As she soaks in the beauty of the island, she encounters a handsome young islander, Winston Shakespeare, who is twenty years younger. His pursuit of her turns into a blossoming romance that forces Stella to take personal inventory of her life and try to find a balance between her desire for love and companionship, and her responsibilities as a mother and corporate executive. The reception from critics was mixed.
