The Book of Enoch is considered to have been written by Enoch, the seventh from Adam. Once considered to be of Christian origin because of its obvious references to Christ, ten fragments of The Book of Enoch have been found at Qumran in the Dead Sea Scrolls, it is known to have existed in its present form since at least the 2nd Century BC. The book was believed to have been composed by Enoch, the great-grandfather of Noah. Most critics and scholars believe it was begun in the second century BC and was a collection of works that includes writings for the first century BC as well. Some believe it contains the actual words of Enoch and that it was handed down through the ages.
The book of Enoch is one of the strangest of the books left out of the Biblical canon. Filled with goetic angels and demons, and visions of inconceivable lands beyond the sky, writers have tied Enoch into everything from archaeoastronomy, Astrology, Alchemy, the Kabbalah, and Gnosticism. Before the , R. Charles translation of the Book of Enoch , was this Laurence translation. This is the translation that many of the prominent 19th century esoteric scholars read, particularly Madam Blavatsky.

Concerning the elect I said, and took up my parable concerning them: The Holy Great One will come forth from His dwelling, 4. And all shall be smitten with fear And the Watchers shall quake, And great fear and trembling shall seize them unto the ends of the earth. And the high mountains shall be shaken, And the high hills shall be made low, And shall melt like wax before the flame 7. But with the righteous He will make peace.
This book was also quoted by some 1st and 2nd century authors as in the Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs. Authors of the New Testament were also familiar with some content of the story. Several copies of the earlier sections of 1 Enoch were preserved among the Dead Sea Scrolls. Most Christian denominations and traditions may accept the Books of Enoch as having some historical or theological interest and while the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church and Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church consider the Books of Enoch as canonical , other Christian groups regard them as non-canonical or non-inspired. For this and other reasons, the traditional Ethiopian belief is that the original language of the work was Ge'ez, whereas modern scholars argue that it was first written in either Aramaic or Hebrew ; Ephraim Isaac suggests that the Book of Enoch, like the Book of Daniel , was composed partially in Aramaic and partially in Hebrew. It is asserted in the book itself that its author was Enoch, before the Biblical Flood.
