Best Travel Guide/Book for India - India Message Board - TripAdvisor

With its sumptuous mix of traditions, spiritual beliefs, festivals, architecture and landscapes, your memories of India will blaze bright long after you've left its shores. Read More. India's landscapes are as fantastically varied as its cultural traditions. From the snow-dusted peaks of the Himalaya to the sun-splashed beaches of the tropical south, the country has a bounty of outdoor attractions. You can scout for big jungle cats on scenic wildlife safaris, paddle in the shimmering waters of coastal retreats, take blood-pumping treks high in the mountains, or simply inhale pine-scented air on meditative forest walks. Among all these natural treasures is a wealth of architectural gems, from serene temples rising out of pancake-flat plains to crumbling forts peering over plunging ravines. Indian cuisine is a scrumptious smorgasbord of regionally distinct recipes, each with their own traditional preparation techniques and presentation styles — from the competing flavours of masterfully marinated meats and thalis plate meals to the simple splendour of vegetarian curries and deep-sea delights.

It is an assault on the senses — all of them, nearly all of the time. There is much that is shocking: the poverty, the noise and dirt, the overladen vehicles playing dodgems on the road. There is also a distinct lack of privacy in this country of a billion people. Trying to cover too much ground on a first visit is a big mistake. A leisurely exploration of a small corner, mixing a few of the major tourist sights with stays in villages or wildlife reserves, is the best way to avoid fort-and-temple fatigue and preserve your sense of humour.

This guide covers the cities of Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur— three cities in northern India that form a convenient triangle route for visitors to the country and provide a gateway to incredible experiences like visiting the Taj Mahal.

When to go to India

It's so hard to know which ones are good until you have actually hit the ground with one. Recommendations would be appreciated If your friend is going to travel to India on a budget then Rough Guide is good. I used the Lonely Planet guide for a trip I took to India in It served me well in my travels to Goa , Mumbai , and points in-between.
