Kurt Weill: Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny

‘On to Mahagonny!’ at the Clarice Smith Center of the University of Maryland

The University of the Maryland is amid an extended festival celebrating Kurt Weill, viewed as a pivotal composer in both his native Germany and his adoptive American homeland. This work and the opera which it later spawned are widely considered to be modern operatic masterworks by Kurt Weill as well as literary masterpieces by librettist Bertolt Brecht. The underlying question posed to the audience is: Can a city founded on pleasure but without ethics survive? All of these performers, especially Hogue, are to be commended not only for their vocal qualities but also for their outstanding pronunciation of German. Key to the production is its successful utilization of the Alienation Effect in both words and music. The goal is for the audience to be ever aware of watching a play so that it can think about the social critique being presented and go out of the theater into society to effect social change.

Kurt Weill wrote to UE in , during his work on Mahagonny : It is beyond question that at present a completely new kind of stage work is emerging, which addresses itself to a different and incomparably larger audience, and whose effect will proliferate in completely unaccustomed ways. This movement — whose most powerful proponent, in the field of theatre, is Brecht — has until now never encroached upon opera, even though music is one of its essential elements. Thus its effectiveness will extend far beyond the time of its creation. It is indeed a matter of creating the new genre that will deal with the utterly different expressions of life in our time in an appropriate form. Product available. Read the full transcript. It was first performed on 9 March at the Neues Theater in Leipzig. Weill was asked by the Baden-Baden music festival committee to write a one act chamber opera for the festival. He ended up writing Mahagonny-Songspiel , sometimes known as Das kleine Mahagonny , a concert work for voices and small orchestra commissioned. The work was written in May , and performed in June. The eleven numbers, which include the "Alabama Song" and "Benares Song", were duly incorporated into the full opera as Weill worked through summer and autumn on the libretto.
