Sports Medicine. Middle- and long-distance running performance is constrained by several important aerobic and anaerobic parameters. The efficacy of strength training ST for distance runners has received considerable attention in the literature. However, to date, the results of these studies have not been fully synthesized in a review on the topic. This systematic review aimed to provide a comprehensive critical commentary on the current literature that has examined the effects of ST modalities on the physiological determinants and performance of middle- and long-distance runners, and offer recommendations for best practice.

Physiological Aspects of Sport Training and Performance

This study analyzed changes in physiological parameters, hormonal markers and kayaking performance following 5-wk of reduced training RT or complete training cessation TC. Subjects undertook blood sampling and an incremental test to exhaustion on a kayak ergometer at T1 and again following 5 weeks of RT or TC T2. Maximal oxygen uptake VO 2 max and oxygen uptake at second ventilatory threshold VT2 significantly decreased following TC Significant decreases were also observed in RT group but to a lesser extent Heart rate at VT2 showed significant increases following TC 3. However, no changes, were detected in heart rate at VO 2 max in any group. Peak blood lactate remained unchanged in both groups at T2.

Sport physiology is the study of how exercise alters the function and structure of the body. A sports physiologist seeks to understand the physiological demands of a sporting performance, which inform what characteristics an athlete should have to be successful competing at the highest level. The physiologist can measure how an athlete performs in tests designed to accurately measure these characteristics, which in turn enables the practitioner to advise coaches and athletes about training and competition, with objectivity and individuality. Physiologists also understand how the body responds and adapts to performing in different environments such as high heat or altitude.
