What Impact Does the Environment Have on Us?

Since the earliest times, humans have needed to be sensitive to their surroundings to survive, which means that we have an innate awareness of our environment and seek out environments with certain qualities. First of all, humans have a strong need for safety and security and look for those attributes in their environment. We also look for physical comfort , such as an environment with the right temperature. In addition, we seek an environment that is psychologically comfortable : for example, environments that are familiar, but offer the right amount of stimulus. Retailers and the hospitality industry know this very well and try to provide an atmosphere that creates a positive customer experience and offers three important attributes: comfort, safety, and entertainment.

A physical environment is considered an area that is tangible and supports, influences, and develops life. On Earth, many different types of physical environments, natural and synthetic, have existed throughout its history. Furthermore, as scientific knowledge of the universe increases, scientists begin to search for true physical environments on other worlds. Earth did not technically exist as a physical environment before 2. At this time, simple, single-celled bacteria appeared and produced oxygen making the Earth suitable for widespread life.

The social environment , social context , sociocultural context or milieu refers to the immediate physical and social setting in which people live or in which something happens or develops. It includes the culture that the individual was educated or lives in, and the people and institutions with whom they interact. The social environment is a broader concept than that of social class or social circle. The physical and social environment is a determining factor in active and healthy aging in place, being a central factor in the study of environmental gerontology. People with the same social environment often develop a sense of social solidarity ; people often tend to trust and help one another, and to congregate in social groups. They will often think in similar styles and patterns even when their conclusions differ.

To understand the context of the WASH sector you need to understand the nature of the interactions between us as human beings and our environment. Humans need to interact with the environment to obtain our food, water, fuel, medicines, building materials and many other things. Advances in science and technology have helped us to exploit the environment for our benefit, but we have also introduced pollution and caused environmental damage. The impact of environmental problems on humans is significant, affecting all human activities, including health and socio-economic development. In this study session you will learn about the relationships between humans and the environment, and the ways in which we use environmental resources.
