Colloid and Surface Chemistry, Volume 12 - 1st Edition

In chemistry , a colloid is a mixture in which one substance of microscopically dispersed insoluble or soluble particles is suspended throughout another substance. Sometimes the dispersed substance alone is called the colloid; [1] the term colloidal suspension refers unambiguously to the overall mixture although a narrower sense of the word suspension is distinguished from colloids by larger particle size. Unlike a solution , whose solute and solvent constitute only one phase , a colloid has a dispersed phase the suspended particles and a continuous phase the medium of suspension that arise by phase separation. To qualify as a colloid, the mixture must be one that does not settle or would take a very long time to settle appreciably. The dispersed-phase particles have a diameter between approximately 1 and nanometers.

Handbook of Surface and Colloid Chemistry Fourth Edition

The Interest Groups are member driven groups which exist to benefit RSC members, and the wider chemical science community, in line with the RSC's strategy and charter. In recent years, to present a more coherent front for colloid science, particularly in the UK, the committee now meets regularly with that of its sister group in the SCI, and all meetings of either group are now co-sponsored. Colloid and Interface Science is an important area of knowledge which underpins a very wide variety of both fundamental and applied science. We are always looking for new members who are keen to get involved and to help organise our activities. If you would like to find out more please contact the Secretary. Annual Report PDF k.

Chapter headings. Selected papers. Introduction to the thermodynamics of the discontinuity surface in a single component system. The surface energy and intermolecular interactions in condensed phases. The Adsorption Phenomena. Principles of adsorption thermodynamics.

This new edition of the Handbook of Surface and Colloid Chemistry informs you of significant recent developments in the field. It highlights new applications and provides revised insight on surface and colloid chemistry?

Examines the relevance of colloid and surface chemistry to industrial research, particularly industrially important colloidal systems.

Colloid and Surface Chemistry is a subject of immense importance and implications both to our everyday life and numerous industrial sectors, ranging from coatings and materials to medicine and biotechnology. How do detergents really clean? Why can't we just use water? Why is milk "milky"? Why do we use eggs so often for making sauces? Can we deliver drugs in better and controlled ways?
