This laboratory manual provides a simplified summary of the principal details of the most common laboratory soil tests used in engineering. These include: a water content determination; b field collection of soil samples; c liquid, plastic and shrinkage limit tests; d the mechanical and hydrometer methods for particle size analysis; e specific gravity; g soil classification; h compaction test; i in place soil density; j coefficient of permeability; k consolidation; l unconfined compression testing; m triaxial tests, both with and without pore pressure measurements; n direct shear test; o relative density determination; p California Bearing Ratio test; q flow net construction using an electrical analogy; r volumetric gravimetric relationships; and s unit weight of cohesive soils. All test procedures have been rewritten since the last edition, and major revisions have been made to: a the shrinkage limit test; b the hydrometer test with the mechanical sieve analysis; c the consolidation test; and e the triaxial tests. The notation has been revised to comply with correct SI units of mass determinants rather than weights. Toggle navigation Menu.
