Product Description Product Details Internationally known and one of the most influential philosophers of his day and for a time almost a cult figure in France, where his lectures drew huge crowds , Henri Bergson led a revolution in philosophical thought by rejecting traditional conceptual and abstract methods, and arguing that the intuition is deeper than the intellect. Though his ideas were sometimes difficult to follow, Bergson was also a fine stylist, who once declared, "there is nothing in philosophy which could not be said in everyday language," and who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in In Time and Free Will, written as his doctoral thesis, Bergson tries to dispel the arguments against free will. These arguments, he shows, come from a confusion of different ideas of time.

SubStance This allowed him to conceive of creativity as the source of both psychological freedom and of life as an open system. Bergson identifies in the history of Western thought the demotion of time to the status of a measurement, a demotion that renders the effects of its real activity in consciousness and in life inexplicable even non-existent. According to Bergson it is impossible, without an adequate conception of time, to properly pose questions of free will or evolution, and in books such as Time and free Will , Matter and Memory and Creative Evolution he reinterprets a vast range of empirical research in such a way as to take into account the role of time in psychological and biological processes. In the late nineteenth century, the sciences of consciousness and of life were dominated by a commitment to materialism and mechanism that meant they struggled to conceptualize growth, change and creativity, or even held such phenomena to be unreal. Bergson's commitment to the reality of time as a source of creative change enabled him to clarify many problems in psychology and biology that appeared contradictory from existing scientific and philosophical perspectives, and to provide a rigorous account of a Creative Evolution , The Creative Mind , and the nature of their relation.

an essay on the immediate data of consciousness.

Bergson proposes a theory of time and freedom. Considered an influence on the French New Wave filmmakers, and a philosopher interested in humor and creativity, Bergson's works are generally a little awkward in translation originals in French , but are well worth the effort. Bergson's basic argument here is that we in literate Western cultures generally use ideas and images associated with space to think about time, clocks and calendars as obvious examples. He says this tends to limit spontaneity and creativity in the present, because we are always using familiar images and expectations to confront the new, and we tend to think of moments in time as hardened rather than fluid as they are. This reviewer found this book to be life-changing, particularly to the degree it echoes some aspects of Eastern philosophies, psychologists interested in the experience of time, and even contemporary cultural critics like Marshal McLuhan.
