While it is a book taught in many schools,  Of Mice and Men has been a frequent target of censors for vulgarity, and what some consider offensive, ableist and racist language; consequently, it appears on the American Library Association 's list of the Most Challenged Books of 21st Century. Two migrant field workers in California on their plantation during the Great Depression—George Milton, an intelligent but uneducated man, and Lennie Small, a bulky, strong man but mentally disabled —are in Soledad on their way to another part of California. They hope to one day attain the dream of settling down on their own piece of land.

The book remains one of the most-assigned novels in the English language. Without reading a page you likely already know the characters of George—slim, smart, responsible—and Lennie—huge, stupid, and casually violent. Like all works of fiction, Of Mice and Men has several possible interpretations.

Of Mice and Men is a story of two migrant workers, George and Lennie, seeking opportunities on ranches in California during the Great Depression period. Lennie is large and strong but mentally disabled. He consistently gets the pair in trouble. He had childishly felt the soft dress of a woman on the ranch where they had been working triggering screams and accusations of rape. They had to flee before a mob captured them. I gotta tell you again, do I? George warns Lennie against talking when they meet the new boss.
