More on the most famous kitties in film noir …. Kim Novak catches James Stewart with help from her cherished pet. Bio: Kim Novak and James Stewart starred in two movies together in In the film, Novak plays Gillian Holroyd, a stylish New Yorker and successful store owner with a knack for witchcraft. But, despite her busy schedule and relentlessly chic wardrobe, Gillian is tired of spending her nights, especially Christmas Eve, talking shop at the campy Zodiac nightclub in the Village with her fellow sorcerers witch Elsa Lanchester and warlock Jack Lemmon. You know, eye of newt and toe of frog, wool of bat and tongue of dog. Blah, blah, blah.

It rarely gets an airing on TV any more, but this movie starring Jimmy Stewart is one of the best festive films ever, says David Barnett… and no, not the one you think. I am, of course, talking about Bell, Book and Candle. Our scene opens in a shop selling African art and artefacts, where a handsome cat with coldly-burning eyes of intelligent blue leaps on to the shoulder of Hitchcock blonde Kim Novak. Bell, Book and Candle was released on Christmas Day , and was a hit. For another, Gillian — along with her eccentric aunt Queenie played by the original Bride of Frankenstein, Elsa Lanchester and her brother Nicky, a superb turn by Jack Lemmon — is a witch.

Pyewacket was one of the supposed familiar spirits of an alleged witch accused by the witchfinder general Matthew Hopkins in March in the town of Manningtree , Essex , England. Hopkins claimed he spied on the witches as they held their meeting close by his house, and heard them mention the name of a local woman. She was arrested and deprived of sleep for four nights, at the end of which she confessed and called out the names of her familiars, describing the forms in which they should appear. They were:. Hopkins claims he and nine other witnesses saw the first five of these, which appeared in the forms described by the witch. Only the first of these was in the form of a cat ; the next two were dogs , and the others were a black rabbit and a polecat — so Pyewacket was, presumably, not a cat's name. As for the other familiars, Hopkins says only that they were such that "no mortall could invent.
